What began in 1976 as a small, community-led project has grown into something much bigger, a place where people of all ages and abilities can connect with animals, nature, and each other. From its early days as a space for local children to experience farm life, to today’s role as a charity supporting adults with learning disabilities, difficulties, and autism, the farm has always been rooted in one simple idea:
A farm like this doesn’t just grow food – it grows people.
Our Story
Ouseburn Farm was created by local families who wanted something different for their children – a chance to learn, explore, and feel part of something real.
Over the past five decades, thousands of people have passed through the gates. Some came on school trips. Some volunteered. Some found confidence, purpose, or a sense of belonging they hadn’t found elsewhere.
Today, the farm is:
- A free visitor attraction in the city
- A working farm with animals, gardens, and beehives
- A charity delivering workshops and opportunities for adults with additional needs
- A space where people feel welcome, included, and valued
While the buildings and projects have evolved, the heart of the farm hasn’t changed.
Why 50 Years Matters
This anniversary isn’t just about looking back, it’s about recognising what makes the farm so important today, and ensuring it continues for the future.
At a time when access to green space, community, and inclusive opportunities is more important than ever, Ouseburn Farm offers something rare, a place to slow down, a place to learn and grow, and a place where everyone belongs. For many people, the farm is part of their story, and has been for generations.
Celebrating Together
Throughout 2026, we’ll be marking our 50th year with a programme of activities and projects, including:
- Heritage projects sharing stories from the farm’s past
- Events and exhibitions celebrating our community
- Opportunities to get involved, volunteer, and support our work
- New developments looking ahead to the next 50 years
We’ll be collecting memories from visitors, volunteers, and participants, because this farm has always been shaped by the people who care about it.
Be Part of Our Next Chapter
